Leaves are coarsely toothed and the teeth generally point toward the tip. The leaves are dull green and sometimes have a purplish blush.

Small, blue flowers are produced either singularly or clustered in groups of 2 or 3 in   on a thickened spike that reaches 12" long or more. Individual flowers last a single day.
