The University of Florida/Volusia County Extension gives leadership to
family-focused informal education through the Family and Consumer
Sciences program. Dedicated to strengthening families through education,
we believe the family is the most effective unit for building strong
communities. The family has the right to meet basic needs and to make
choices about its future, and is inter-dependent within communities and
their environment.
Extension strives to achieve this through a variety of formats,
including:
- Workshops & presentations
- Newsletters and fact sheets
- Telephone consultations
- Learn-by mail correspondence courses

Jill Taufer, EFNEP Coordinator
The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and the
University of Florida Extension Service work in collaboration with local
County partners to deliver educational programs to Volusia families.
The objectives of Adult EFNEP are to help low-income families,
especially those with young children, to acquire the knowledge, skills,
attitudes, and changed behaviors necessary for nutritionally sound
diets, and to contribute to their personal development and the
improvement of total family diet and nutritional welfare. Participation
in EFNEP should result in:
- Improved diets and nutritional welfare for the total family
- Increased knowledge of the essentials of human nutrition
- Increased ability to select and buy food that satisfies
nutritional needs
- Improved practices in food production, preparation, storage,
safety, and sanitation
- Increased ability to manage food budgets and food resources such
as food stamps
Program Assistants, who are University of Florida employees, receive
continuous training and support from the EFNEP program coordinator.
Curriculum and support materials are provided through the University of
Florida Extension Service. For more information on the Adult EFNEP
program in Volusia County, contact
