Drought index
The countywide average Monday, May 29, was 574 on the
Keetch-Byram Drought Index, with 800 indicating desert-like conditions. The range across
Volusia was 352-706.
Fires
County Fire Services is monitoring for new fires that may have
been caused by lightening strikes. Mop up operations are being conducted on the following
fires, which began over the Memorial Day weekend.
Samsula/New Smyrna
Beach
Ranchette Road/Cedar Road (off State Road 44
west of New Smyrna Beach): Forty-one acres, no
homes threatened. One home's paint/siding blistered by fire. Fire currently is
contained and under control.
Southwest Volusia
Kove Estates: Fire is
approximately 97 acres. Fire currently is contained and under control.
Piney Woods Trail: Approximately 155 acres. Items burned: four
recreational-type vehicles, two single-wide mobile homes, two pole bars, two sheds, one
pump shed and one flat bed trailer. Damage estimate: $16,000. Fire currently is
contained and under control.
A Field Command
Center has been established at County Fire Station 36, 180 Osteen Road.
