Mosquito-borne illnesses
Mosquitoes are
vectors of disease, meaning they have the ability to pick up,
carry and transmit the agents that cause a specific disease. Many agents
are viruses, including those responsible for West Nile disease, Eastern Equine
Encephalitis and St. Louis Encephalitis.
Experts, including those at the
Centers for Disease Control and Volusia County Health Department,
indicate the chance that any one person is going to become ill from a
single mosquito bite is very low.
Animals also are affected by mosquito-borne
disease.
