HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO DISCONTINUE PRIMARY HEALTH SERVICES IN WEST VOLUSIA

The Volusia County Health Department will discontinue primary health care services at its Orange City clinic June 30 and its Deltona clinic Sept. 30. Patients are being asked to find new health care providers and transfer their medical records before the closures.

The change is the result of a decision by the West Volusia Hospital Authority to discontinue its contract with the health department and sign on with Northeast Florida Health Services, a federally qualified health center that can receive higher federal reimbursements than the health department. Northeast Florida Health Services runs Pierson Medical Center, 114 N. Volusia Ave, and plans to open clinics in DeLand and Deltona.
DeLand Medical Center is set to open April 1 at 844 W. Plymouth Ave., and a third clinic is scheduled to open in Deltona Oct. 1.

“The FQHC has inherent advantages the health department lacks,” said Health Department Director Dr. Tom Coleman. “The federally qualified health center model can potentially receive federal funding and has the ability to accommodate many types of payments.”

Health department patients wanting to transfer their care to Northeast Florida Health Services may call (386) 738-2422 to schedule an appointment. The new provider accepts all patients, including those with Medicaid and clinic cards. It also accepts private pay and most insurance plans.

Patients should call the health department at (386) 822-6215, ext. 6123, to have their medical records transferred to Northeast Florida Health Services or another doctor's office.

The health department will continue to offer immunizations, communicable disease control, an HIV/AIDS clinic, testing and treatment for tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases, and an early detection program for breast and cervical cancer at its Orange City and Deltona clinics. The health department will also continue to operate its Women’s Health Services Center in DeLand. WIC and Nutrition Services are offered in DeLand and Deltona. For more information about the health services that will continue to be offered by the Volusia County Health Department, please call (386) 822-6215.
