VOLUSIA COUNTY LIBRARIES LAUNCH THE BIG READ

The Volusia County Public Library system will take part in the nationwide Big Read program by exploring the concepts of censorship and book burning. Programs at the county’s regional libraries will focus on Ray Bradbury’s novel “Fahrenheit 451.”

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts to restore reading to the center of American culture.

Volusia County’s regional libraries will offer the following as part of the Big Read program:

DeLand Area Public Library, 130 E. Howry Ave.

  • 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 1: Watch “Fahrenheit 451.”
  • 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 3: Firefighters from the DeLand Fire Department will do a safety demonstration and showcase a fire truck.
  • 5:15 p.m. Thursday, April 3: Watch “Fahrenheit 451.”
  • 10 a.m. Friday, April 4: The Hill Street Players, DeLand High School's advanced drama students, will perform a short play with related themes followed by discussion of the book, movie and play.
  • 10:15 a.m. Friday, April 4: Group book discussion.

New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, 1001 S. Dixie Freeway

  • 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30: Watch the movie and join a book discussion.
  • 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 2: Open book discussion with a guest speaker.
  • 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3: Watch “Fahrenheit 451.”

Ormond Beach Regional Library, 20 S. Beach St.

  • 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 8: Book club discussion.
  • 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 9: Watch “Fahrenheit 451.”

Volusia County Library Center at City Island

  • 4 p.m. Thursday, April 10: Derek Catron, associate managing editor of the Daytona Beach News-Journal, will lead a first amendment discussion.
  • 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 11: Watch “Fahrenheit 451.”
  • 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12: Open discussion dealing with censorship and book banning.

Deltona Regional Library, 2150 Eustace Ave.

  • Submit your essay contest entry by 5 p.m. Saturday, April 12. The theme is “If you could secretly save one book, which would you choose and why?” Readers of all ages are eligible, and prizes will include gift cards to local book stores.
  • 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19: Watch “Fahrenheit 451.”
  • 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday, May 3: Book sale.

Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle

  • 10 a.m. Thursday, April 10: Teen book club discussion on “What book would you save?”
  • 2 p.m. Monday, April 14: Watch “Fahrenheit 451.”
  • 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 16: Book club discussion.
  • 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30: Kids book club discussion.

The National Endowment for the Arts presents the Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

Volusia County’s Big Read program is presented in partnership with WCEU Channel 15, Volusia County Schools and the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
