DEBARY HALL OFFERS SUMMER DAY CAMPS

Kids can learn about Florida’s past while enjoying summer vacation at DeBary Hall Historic Site, 210 Sunrise Blvd.

The site will offer four different week-long day camps from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday - Friday for children ages 7 - 12. The charge is $75 a week.

“Adventures in Time” will be the theme for the first week, June 9 - 13. Campers will experience what life was like at the turn of the century and will talk with historical characters, make historical toys, play old-fashioned games, and go on an archaeological dig.

Week two, June 23 - 27, will be the “Turn-of-the-Century Invention Convention.” Participants will learn about inventions used at DeBary Hall and will be encouraged to create their own inventions.

“Scientific Florida” is the theme for the week of July 14 - 18, which will focus on Florida’s plants, animals and geological features.

From July 28 - Aug. 1, campers can test their knowledge, physical abilities and team-building skills during “Game Quest.” Activities will include games, puzzles, mysteries, scavenger hunts and an obstacle course.

Advance registration is required. Registrants can sign up at DeBary Hall or the Leisure Services office, 202 N. Florida Ave., DeLand. Registration is limited to 20 campers per week, and campers must bring their own snacks and lunches each day.

DeBary Hall was built in 1871 as a hunting retreat for wine importer Frederick deBary and is operated by Volusia County to educate residents and tourists about Florida’s history.
