‘ROAD SCHOLAR’ TO PORTRAY CONSERVATIONIST
Betty Jean Steinshouer will portray conservationist Marjory Stoneman
Douglas at 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Lake Helen City Hall, 327. S.
Lakeview Drive. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Lake
Helen Public Library.
Douglas was a journalist and environmentalist known for her defense
of the Everglades against draining and development. In 1947, she wrote
“Everglades: River of Grass,” which brought attention to the need to
preserve the vast marshlands.
Steinshouer is a member of the Florida Humanities Council’s “Road
Scholars” program, which presents educational programs around the state.
