Passenger traffic at Daytona Beach International
Airport decreased 36 percent in May compared with May 2008. The decline
is attributed to loss of AirTran one year ago, combined with the
economic downturn and a loss of seating capacity that is affecting
airports across the United States.
However, the airport’s two major carriers - U.S.
Airways and Delta Air Lines - are reporting impressive numbers for May.
U.S. Airways reported passenger loads of 84 percent and Delta Air Lines
reported passenger loads of 91 percent. U.S. Airways flies nonstop
between Daytona Beach and Charlotte. Delta Air Lines flies nonstop to
and from Atlanta.
Last month, the Volusia County-operated airport
recorded 41,795 incoming and outgoing passengers, compared with 64,854
travelers in May 2008. For the 12-month period ending May 31, total
passenger traffic declined 40 percent from 764,413 passengers in 2008 to
455,401 passengers this year.
