It was 1979 when the announcements were made:
Margaret Thatcher became Britain's first female prime minister, Soviet
forces invaded Afghanistan, and the Garfield comic strip had its first
run. And Sept. 8 of that year, Delta Air Lines Inc. commenced daily
scheduled passenger service between Daytona Beach Regional Airport and
Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport.
Thirty years later, at noon Tuesday, Sept. 8,
2009, Volusia County Council members, Daytona Beach International
Airport (DBIA) officials, Delta Air Lines representatives, and the
public will celebrate Delta’s three decades of service at DBIA.
“Delta has been a steadfast partner with our
airport, Volusia County and the East Central Florida region for all
these years, never wavering in its commitment to our travelers,” said
County Chair Frank Bruno, who is planning to proclaim Sept. 8 as “Delta
Air Lines Day” in Volusia County. “In an industry with so many ups and
downs, so many failed plans and course changes, we are overjoyed to be
celebrating Delta’s dedication to our community next Tuesday. We look
forward to the next 30 years of partnership.”
The celebration will take place in the ticketing
lobby on the DBIA ground floor and will be marked by free refreshments,
free parking all day in the airport’s lots, door prizes and a Delta Air
Lines’ ticket giveaway of two round-trip coach tickets to anywhere in
the contiguous United States. People can enter to win the free Delta
tickets by completing entry forms available in the airport and returning
them to the first-floor information desk by 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Passengers on the 6 and 7 a.m. Delta flights
departing from DBIA also will be treated with breakfast at the gate,
compliments of Delta Air Lines and the airport. A water salute will mark
the 6 a.m. flight departure as well.
