County celebrates US Airways' return to Daytona Beach Feb. 1; nonstop service to Charlotte begins same day

On Dec. 3, Congressman John Mica announced that US Airways would be returning to Daytona Beach. Now it’s about to become a reality.

The new nonstop service to Charlotte Douglas International Airport begins Friday, Feb. 1. The Volusia County Council, citizens and community leaders will celebrate the first arriving flight at the US Airways’ ticket counter at 11 a.m. on the airport’s ground floor. Following a ribbon-cutting ceremony and comments from County leaders and US Airways management, Volusia County Fire Services Station 17 will welcome the first US Airways’ flight arriving at DBIA with a water salute. The new service includes three daily roundtrip flights between Daytona Beach and Charlotte. US Airways will use the 86-passenger Embraer (EMB) 175 to provide the service. The EMB 175 is known for modern style, comfort and fuel efficiency, and is one of the newest commercial passenger planes in use today.

Charlotte is a major hub for US Airways, with connecting flights to dozens of cities. US Airways operates 522 daily flights from Charlotte.

“We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone event and to have US Airways back in Daytona Beach,” said Dennis McGee, Director of Aviation for DBIA. “We look forward to this new partnership with US Airways for years to come.”

The first daily flight departs Charlotte at 10 a.m. and arrives in Daytona Beach at 11:45 a.m. The second flight from Charlotte departs at 3 p.m., and arrives in Daytona Beach at 4:45 p.m. The third daily flight departs Charlotte at 8 p.m., and arrives in Daytona Beach at 9:45 p.m.

The first flight leaves Daytona Beach at 8:30 a.m., and arrives in Charlotte at 10:15 a.m. The second flight departs Daytona Beach at 12:30 p.m. and arrives in Charlotte at 2:15 p.m. The final daily flight will depart Daytona Beach at 5:30 p.m., and arrives in Charlotte at 7:15 p.m.
