Full-scale emergency
response exercise Tuesday, March 16
Daytona Beach International Airport
Tuesday will test its disaster response readiness during a full-scale
emergency response exercise from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the airport. This
exercise is part of a triennial requirement of the Federal Aviation
Administration that tests the airport’s emergency response capability.
People who live or work near the airport may hear emergency vehicle
sirens and see smoke the day of the exercise. They also may see law
enforcement and fire rescue activity in the area. Daytona Beach
International Airport will be open for business as usual during the
exercise.
The exercise will bring together multiple first responders to include
federal, state and local law enforcement, fire agencies and EVAC
ambulance. In addition, the Daytona Beach Fire Department will respond.
There are more than 130 participants in this drill.
A plane fuselage will be pre-staged on airport property. More than 60
volunteers will play “victims”. The victims are volunteers from Daytona
State College nursing program and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Emergency responders will begin staging at 8 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, at
the backside of Daytona International Speedway (DBIA cell phone lot
along Midway Avenue).
During the exercise, traffic on Midway
Avenue, Richard Petty Boulevard and Coral Sea Avenue may be interrupted
temporarily to allow ingress and egress of emergency vehicles.
