August passenger traffic decreases 17 percent at DBIA; Officials celebrate 30-year partnership with Delta Air Line

Passenger traffic at Daytona Beach International Airport (DBIA) decreased 17 percent in August 2009 compared with August 2008.

During August, 33,680 passengers traveled through DBIA compared with 40,577 in August 2008. For the 12-month period ending Aug. 30, 425,117 passengers traveled through the county-operated airport compared with the prior 12-month period. This represents a 35-percent decrease.

Though passenger traffic was down in August at DBIA, Delta Air Lines and US Airways reported high passenger loads of 91 percent (Delta Air Lines) and 88 percent (US Airways) of available seats filled.

The traffic decrease in August was significantly reduced from the previous 30- to 35-percent monthly declines, which have been reported by the airlines during most months this calendar year. Local airport officials site the loss of AirTran Airways in May 2008 and the nation’s depressed economy as key factors in the 17-percent passenger traffic decline.

In other airport news, on Sept. 8 the Volusia County Council honored Delta Air Lines for 30 consecutive years of service to Volusia County and the East Central Florida Region. County Chair Frank Bruno presented a commemorative plaque to Delta officials, and nearly 200 citizens gathered to celebrate.

“Today, our country is in the grips of an economic recession, and everyone is doing more with less,” said Bruno. “However, as we are going through this difficult period, our friend and partner, Delta Air Lines, has stuck with us. We know that when things get better, as they will, Delta Air Lines will be standing tall at Daytona Beach International Airport.”

Said DBIA Director of Aviation Dennis McGee: “Delta has remained committed to our community through all the industry and economic difficulties. We are deeply grateful for Delta’s loyalty and service to our market.”
