Pyracantha coccinea
.

Firethorn is a fast growing, sprawling, spreading shrub that needs virtually no care or attention, however pruners should beware of its sharp thorns.

Leaves
Leaves are glossy, dark green and measure about an inch in length.

Flowers
Small, white flower appear in spring clustering into 2inch diameter mounds.

Fruit
The fruit is red, orange, or yellow berries born in prolific amounts.  Berries cluster in the fall and may last till spring.

Stems
Stems have painful thorns up to two inches in length.  Stems also arch as they lengthen, but most noticeably under weight of the berries.

Propagation
Propagation should be by hardwood cuttings.

Landscape usage
Firethorn can be used advantageously on slopes or considered a hedge.  Thorns will deter almost any penetration, so it can be used for security beneath windows. When placed in front of a wall or fence, the colors of the berries and flowers look quite distinguished.
