| Firethorn is a fast growing, sprawling, spreading
shrub that needs virtually no care or attention, however pruners should beware of its
sharp thorns. |

Leaves
Leaves are glossy, dark green and measure
about an inch in length.
Flowers
Small, white flower appear in spring clustering into 2inch diameter mounds.
Fruit
The fruit is red, orange, or yellow
berries born in prolific amounts. Berries cluster in the fall and may last till
spring.
Stems
Stems have painful thorns up to two
inches in length. Stems also arch as they lengthen, but most noticeably under weight
of the berries.
Propagation
Propagation should be by hardwood
cuttings.
Landscape usage
Firethorn can be used advantageously on slopes or considered a hedge. Thorns will
deter almost any penetration, so it can be used for security beneath windows. When placed
in front of a wall or fence, the colors of the berries and flowers look quite
distinguished.
