Podocarpus has thick, flat foliage. Each
needle is about 1.5 inches in length.
Flowers
Yellow, flower-like structures appear in spring.
Fruit
Blue gray berries appear in August.
They have a low toxicity and cause nausea and vomiting if consumed by children.
Cones
Podocarps are gymnosperms like pines,
spruces and cycads; they bear cones.
Bark
Thick trunks of the old podocarpus
are very hard and difficult to bend.
Propagation
Since the seeds take two years to
germinate, Podocarpus is easily propagated by hardwood cuttings.
Landscape usage
Podocarpus is an excellent, long-living, woody foliage shrub that can be shaped and easily
trimmed. If left to grow, it can become a tough urban tree. Podocarpus can be used as a
specimine, sheared hedge, espalier, container tree, topiary, screen, patio tree, shade
tree, sidewalk tree, and street tree.
