Chaste Tree

The Chaste Tree can serve as a small tree or large shrub.  It spouts an abundance of rich green foliage and the fragrant flourescent flowers bloom from summer to fall.  

Leaves
Leaves of the Chaste Tree are 5-fingered,   grey-green above, greyish, and slightly fuzzy below. The leaves are highly aromatic and resemble the hemp plant.

Flowers
Chaste Tree has fragrant upward pointing cones of flowers that are purple in color.   The flowers attract butterflies and bees in late summer.

Fruit
Fruit is black and inconspicuous. It is sometimes used as a seasoning.

Trunk
The gray bark is arranged in small, block patterns

Propagation
By seed in the spring and fall or by cuttings which are easy to root in warm weather.

Landscape usage
The Chaste Tree is effective in mixed shrubbery or as a single specimen. Plant near patio or deck where it can be seen and smelled, but since the flowers attract bees space it from the common area accordingly.

Interesting Facts
Due to its leafy resemblence to marijuana, this plant often requires a doubletake when spotted in the garden.
