March 23 Program
Scrub Habitat Restoration

Don Schaeffer

The restoration of Lyonia Preserve, the former Section 16, in Deltona, has been a success story in terms of bringing back to an original state that area, which is now completely surrounded by suburban development. Randall Sleister, an Environment Specialist III for Volusia County Environmental Management Department, has played a major part in this restoration. He will be the speaker for the March 23 meeting, and through slides and pictures he will take us through the stages of the restoration project. He will also introduce us to some of the critters who have been restored to a new home there.

Coming up in April, our program will be about "Birding on the Internet" - and about WVAS' outstanding computer web page . This will be a live presentation with a computer-generated demonstration of actual material on the 'net.

Notification of Proposed Bylaw Amendment - Mary Jean Rogers

The Board of Directors of West Volusia Audubon Society, at their regular monthly meeting on Monday, March 1, 1999, voted to propose an amendment to Article VIII, Standing Committees, of the chapter bylaws.

The amendment, an entirely new Section 11, will provide for the establishment of one additional standing committee. It will read: "Section 11. * The Audubon Refuge Keepers (ARK) Committee." This will require a change to the present Section 11, appointment of ad hoc committees, which will be renumbered 12.

After notification in the chapter newsletter, herewith, the proposed amendment will be presented at the March 23 members' meeting. Voting on the proposed amendment will take place at the April 27 meeting.

Audubon Refuge Keepers (ARK) was created through a memorandum of understanding between the National Audubon Society (NAS) and the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish & Wildlife Service in October 1996. NAS encourages local chapters to work with representatives of local service offices to establish and implement cooperative work on mutually beneficial projects and activities. West Volusia Audubon Society is an ARK member.
