Bob Putney (March 7) and Don Davis (March 14) rounded out Sam Root's crew of volunteer scopers who celebrated our chapter's 10th year of providing scopes at the refuge on winter Sunday afternoons.

Thank you, Kathy Barnard, Cyndy Barrow, Don Davis, Andy Dillman, Janet McFarlane, Bob Putney, Barbara Samler, Don Schaeffer and Arnette Sherman, for pitching in and pointing out the birds to refuge visitors this year. Thank you, Sam Root, Scopes Chairman, for organizing accomplished with such flair since 1993.

Lucky scopers during February may have had a look at the Short-tailed Hawk, a rare spring visitor to the refuge, or the immature Bald Eagle-a curious fellow who flew low to get a good luck at visitors, affording visitors a superb look at him. A Cooper's Hawk, another rare visitor (in spring, fall and winter), was also seen, along with Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs, found only occasionally at the refuge.
