May 25 Program
Mary Jean Rogers

Our 1998-1999 series of evening programs ends with the May 25 banquet. After the summer hiatus, the 1999-2000 program series will commence on September 28 at Faith Lutheran Church, 509 East Pennsylvania Avenue, DeLand. Programs are presented first, followed by refreshments and a short business meeting. Smoke-free environment; wheelchair-accessible. All are welcome.

This issue of the Hummer is sponsored in part by Chuck and Carol Mason. Their thoughtful donation to the Hummer and to West Volusia Audubon Society has been applied to printing expenses incurred for this issue. Thank you, Chuck and Carol.

Refuge Support Group Formed
Kathy Barnard

The "Friends of Lake Woodruff" National Wildlife Refuge is officially formalized and functioning The newly created refuge support group is an Audubon Refuge Keepers (ARK) Organization affiliated with West Volusia Audubon Society, Inc. The Friends of Lake Woodruff NWR will be an independent group in terms of finances, budget, decision-making and projects but will have representation on the WVAS board and report to the general membership of the chapter. We will share the chapter's 501(C)(3) federal tax-exempt status.

The committee will have six members as follows: Kathy Barnard, Chairman Ed Sherman, Secretary Cyndy Barrow, Treasurer Mary Jean Rogers, Newsletter, Website, Publicity

Kathy Paynter and Bill Fraser will be assisting as non-Audubon community refuge-users as recommended in guidelines established by US Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) and National Audubon Society (NAS). The members were chosen for their diverse backgrounds, areas of interest and expertise, past track records as well as their passionate interest in the refuge.

I feel with this combination and with the guidance of Henry Sansing, Refuge Manager, and Brian Braudis, Assistant Refuge Manager, as advisors, much can and will be accomplished.

Once a project list has been generated and prioritized, we will be organizing volunteer groups. They will be able to assist in many capacities with programs, projects and events. We will also hope to have a members' newsletter and website in the future.

Although as a member of WVAS you will automatically become a member of The Friends of Lake Woodruff NWR, your tax-deductible donations will be appreciated to help purchase materials needed for educational programs and to cover postage. We have applied for a joint grant from FWS and NAS to purchase a computer, software and printer and are currently waiting to hear from this. Meanwhile we will be doing our strategic planning through the hot steamy days of summer in order to be ready for action this fall.

WVAS... Committed to ongoing stewardship and enjoyment of the natural world.
