Halifax River Cleanup

The 21st Annual
Halifax/Indian River Cleanup
Saturday, May 2, 2009
8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

In conjunction with Join Hands Day, the Halifax/Indian River Cleanup was held May 2, 2009.
The Halifax/Indian River Cleanup is one of 10 selected as a winner of a 2008 JOIN HANDS DAY Excellence Award.  Nearly 1,000 projects were considered for last year's awards program, and an independent panel of judges, chose the Halifax/Indian River Cleanup for its demonstration of a solid youth and adult partnership, as well as a notable impact on the community.

There were 15 different sites to report to along both rivers from Ormond Beach to Oak Hill. The 615 volunteers picked up 11.6 tons of trash along 56 miles of river.

Volunteers were encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and close-toed shoes, to bring work gloves, rakes, shovels, trash grabbers and bottled water and to use sun protection.

Previously, the 20th Annual Halifax/Indian River Cleanup was held on May 3, 2008.  A total of 635 volunteers collected 17.9 tons of trash along 56 miles of riverbank.
