South Beaches Emergency Dune Restoration Project

In response to recent severe erosion of the south beaches, the County of Volusia, in partnership with the City of New Smyrna Beach, the State of Florida and the Florida Inland Navigation District has begun a large-scale public works project intended to temporarily restore the dune system along approximately 5 miles of Atlantic shoreline in the New Smyrna Beach/Silver Sands area.

Aerial Project map

This project will offload an Intra-coastal Waterway dredge spoil island containing approximately 750,000 cubic yards of beach compatible sand.

The sand will be off-loaded from the island and hydraulically pumped via pipeline along approximately 5 miles of the Volusia County South Beaches from Sapphire Road south to the Ocean Club North Condominium. The sand will be formed into a dune berm feature approximately 30' to 50' in width and 5' to 7' in height with the intent to provide temporary erosion protection for upland beachfront properties and restore more normal beach pedestrian and vehicular use/access.

The project is currently underway and pumping of sand onto the beach is slated to begin in early January 2006 with project completion set for March/April 2006.

This project is designed to create a temporary emergency protective dune feature and is not a full-scale beach renourishment/restoration project.
