Chair’s Report:
Chair recognized Don Gooding who is leaving County employment and
expressed that he would be missed. Chair introduced Don’s replacement
Walt Lacey. Chair advised Board of next meeting which is Wednesday,
March 15, 2006 at 8:30 am at the Kelly Administration Building in Deland
in the Training Room.
Minutes:
Motion made by Deborah Denys and seconded by Essie Smith to approve
minutes of October 26, 2005. Motion passed.
Correspondence:
Funding request from Minister Brown of Back to Basics for $1,000 for the
purchase of a computer, printer and color copier. Dave Evans questioned
Back to Basics Board members are local. Minister Brown replied that all
board members but one are local. Minister Brown stated that the agency
is registered to do business under the name of Allen Family Services.
Deborah Denys asked who would be the payee, Allen Family Services or
Back to Basics. Minister Brown stated that check should be made to Back
to Basics. Dr. Martin stated that he has been involved with another
agency who is supporting Back to Basics. MaryLou Mirino asked Minister
Brown to provide receipts for purchases. Minister Brown agreed. Motion
by Deborah Denys and seconded by Dave Evans to approve request. Motion
passed.
Request from Gail Gregory from Mental Health Association to re-allocate
CFAB funding for suicide prevention for staff to a part-time researcher
and educational materials. Motion by Dave Evans and seconded by Deborah
Denys to re-allocate funding. Motion passed. Director, Gail Gregory was
advised to provide revised section 2.

New Business:
Staff presented revised monitoring checklist for board approval. (See
attached) Motion by Dr. Martin and seconded by Deborah Denys to accept
modifications to monitoring checklist, Motion passed.
Staff requested direction from the Board regarding Summer Camp and
whether they want to follow the same procedure as last year in offering
agencies within the community the opportunity to provide summer camp.
Mary Bruno requested that statement for partnership with the school
board be added to the application. Motion made by Mary Bruno and
seconded by Dr. Martin to use same process for scholarships used for
2005 camp. Motion passed.
Public Participation:
Claris MacKie – Family Renew advised Board that Family Renew wants to
expand in West Volusia, however, she has been contacted by a group in
New Smyrna Beach who want a shelter in New Smyrna Beach. They are
willing to provide support in financial support, volunteers, public
awareness contact and fundraising. They are considering a motel on US1.
A shelter on the west side of the county is still being planned for the
future. Ms. MacKie advised the Board of an agency called the Faith Group
whose focus is affordable housing. Don Gooding advised that the County
offers affordable housing programs for first time home owners and down
payment assistance.
Deborah Susswein of Healthy Communities distributed the 2006 Community
Resource Packet on Safe Children and Healthy Families.
Monica Perry of Pace Center for Girls advised Board of new location for
Pace.
Advisory Board Participation:
Deborah Denys, representing the Early Learning Coalition, requested
$1,000 for purchase of the book “The Night before Kindergarten” for
distribution to 4 year olds. Motion by Dr. Martin and seconded by Essie
Smith to provide $1,000 to the Early Learning Coalition for the purchase
of the book “The Night before Kindergarten”. Dave Evans asked if the
Coalition has financial resources to assist with the purchase of the
books. Deborah Denys advised that there were state and federal dollars.
Motion passed.
Mary Bruno requested that CFAB meetings be coordinated with the Early
Learning Coalition meetings. Claris MacKie advised that Workforce
Development has a meeting room that might be available. Ms. Bruno also
expressed appreciation to Don Gooding for his support of the CFAB and
that he will be missed.
