Stetson University
National Register Historic District
Stetson University, with its rich tradition, is Floridas premier private university.
It was founded in 1883 by a New York businessman, Henry DeLand, and named for his friend
Philadelphia hat manufacturer, John B. Stetson. The first building on campus, DeLand Hall,
is still in use, and it serves as a historic landmark for the city of DeLand and the
University.
The university is a diverse mix of
old and new. While the campus is part of DeLand's beautiful historic district and is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places, new ground has been broken for the
construction of new buildings and renovation of the old to help meet the challenges of the
21st Century.
