E.F.G.
Orchids, now in its 65th year, has bloomed into a worldwide
business.
“It’s
challenging work and the current economic climate is as challenging
for us as it
is for everyone,” said George Hausermann. “It’s not easy work, but
is gratifying and rewarding and we love it.”
Founded
in the Chicago area in 1939 by Carl D. Hausermann and Erwin
Hausermann
Sr., the company supplies the wholesale market with cut orchid
blooms and gardenias.
In the
1960s, third-generation Ronald, George Sr., Erwin Jr., and Kenneth
Hausermann joined their father. Their goal was to produce new orchid
varieties to
enhance the sale of cut flowers.
This led
to E.F.G. Orchids emerging as the largest wholesale producer of cut
cattleya
orchid flowers in the world. Its hybridizing program has produced
crosses that are known worldwide.
In 1999
with ever increasing expenses in the Chicago area, E.F.G Orchids
moved to
DeLand. The Florida location, called Power Plant, is managed by
George Jr. and wife,
Paula. The main growing area consists of 20,000 square feet for
orchid crosses and
other tropical plants and landscape material. The company is well
known in the orchid
society world, and has built a reputation for having clean,
reasonably priced, well grown and established plants along with
great customer service.
The
company’s products are used across the nation and around the world.
Exports
include shipment to Japan, Puerto Rico and locations throughout
Europe. The company
participates in about 40 consumer and trade shows annually, which
keeps its products and technologies at the forefront of the
industry.
