ATTEND QUARTERLY COMMUNITY ECONOMIC
BRIEFING AUG. 7 – The Volusia County Department of Economic
Development will be addressing business, banking, education and local
government leaders about the state of the Volusia County economy at 7:45
a.m. Friday, Aug. 7. The quarterly briefing will be in the Volusia Room
on the second level of Daytona Beach International Airport. Topics will
include the area’s employment trends, commercial and residential
building activities and residential foreclosure rates for April, May and
June 2009. Seating for the event is limited to 120 registrants. To

IMPROVE YOUR NEGOTIATING SKILLS – From 7:45 - 9 a.m. Tuesday,
Aug. 4, the Volusia Manufacturers Association will present Body
language: a key to a successful negotiation, by speaker Ken Roberts of
Dale Carnegie. The presentation is a recommended for anyone in sales,
buying or those who negotiate contracts. Cost is $18 per person. The

GREEN WORKSHOPS – Daytona State College is offering Green
Development and Construction workshops Aug. 7 and 8. Earn CEUs and gain

EMBRY-RIDDLE SCIENTIST GETS GRANT – Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University (ERAU) scientist Katariina Nykyri has been awarded $483,699
over the next five years through a National Science Foundation faculty
early career development grant. The money will support her continuing
research into space plasma heating and transport. Nykyri is an assistant
professor in the physical sciences department at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona
Beach campus. Nykyri is the third professor at ERAU in Daytona Beach to
receive the award in the last four years.
EDUCATION TAX CREDIT – The Hope
Credit has been expanded and renamed the American Opportunity Tax Credit
for 2009 and 2010. Taxpayers can claim up to $2,500 per student per year
for the first four years of post-secondary education. The claims can be
more generous than the Lifetime Learning Credit, which is limited to
$2,000 per return per year for all eligible students. For more
