ANN MCFALL RESPONDS TO SECURITY ISSUES

In response to Florida Secretary of State Kurt Browning’s correspondence with Diebold Elections Systems regarding election security, Supervisor of Elections Ann McFall would like people to be aware of security modifications that will be implemented in Volusia County in advance of the January 29, 2008 Presidential Preference Primary. The modifications can be broken down as follows:

EQUIPMENT SECURITY:

Effective January 1, 2008, election equipment will no longer be stored with poll workers in homes overnight in advance of an election. The equipment will be delivered to regionally secured sites where it will be picked up or delivered to the polling place on Election morning.  In addition, the number of security seals used on each unit will be increased. The tracking and reporting of the seals will be improved.

 BUILDING SECURITY:

In response to the concern expressed that election officials need to continue to restrict access to areas, security at the main office will be tightened. There will be black out dates when the Historic Courthouse in DeLand will be unavailable for public functions. Security in the Elections Management area, particularly the GEMS room and the storage vault will be heightened. Early voting will occur on the main floor of the Historic Courthouse, not the ground floor. There will be restricted access on Election Night to certain areas by the public. Security at the warehouse where the equipment is stored will also be increased.

Supervisor McFall will be addressing further changes in security measures upon receipt of a technical advisory from the Secretary of State that will be issued to all Diebold customers. This technical advisory will outline suggested additional election and security procedures to further mitigate issues that concern both the State Division of Elections and the Volusia County Department of Elections.

McFall’s main goal is to assure the public that everyone who works for the Volusia County Department of Elections takes their job of assuring fair and equitable elections seriously.
