Volusia Prepares
Planning for a secure future
Volusia
Prepares is a communitywide effort to reduce the impact of natural and
manmade disasters on Volusia County through pre-disaster planning and
preparation.
Businesses, community groups, government
agencies and citizens are working together to help identify hazards and
vulnerabilities within their neighborhoods and to make their homes and
workplaces safer. Educational programs, personal and business disaster
planning, and information on home projects that can be done when
remodeling are available.
- A "Partnership" of every sector of the community -
business, industry, government, public groups, and institutions - working together to make
Volusia County resistant to the impacts of disasters.
- Organized in recognition of Volusia Countys continually
growing vulnerability to the human, environmental and economic impacts of a major
hurricane or other major disaster.
- A contribution to the continuing economic development and
growth of the community by securing the future from the potentially severe economic
impacts of disasters.
- A cooperative, public-private effort to prepare a "Local
Mitigation Strategy", which will consist of plans and programs for both pre-disaster
hazard mitigation and post-disaster redevelopment.
- An assessment of all types of initiatives that could lessen
the communitys vulnerabilities to disasters,
including:
- Structural and non-structural
- Short and long term
- Required and voluntary projects and programs
- Anticipated to be active in the implementation of the Local
Mitigation Strategy and in monitoring the effectiveness of the programs developed.
- Guided by a "Steering Committee" of selected
representatives of local government and the private sector, which is supported by a
"Working Group" of any and all interested individuals and organizations.
"Volusia
Prepares" will
use
- "2020 hindsight" to understand the mistakes of the
past that contributed to the vulnerability of the community to disasters,
- "2020 insight" to understand how Volusia County is
vulnerable to disasters and corrective actions that can be taken,
- "2020 foresight" to plan for a future that is secure
from the human and economic impacts of disaster, in order to achieve a disaster resistant
community by the Year 2020!
