Keep Daytona Beach Beautiful and Local Schools Promote Monofilament Line Recycling

The school committee of Keep Daytona Beach Beautiful (KDBB) works hard each year to teach the youth of Daytona Beach about recycling. The committee, which is made up of KDBB board members and Daytona Beach school personnel, culminated this year’s project at the 14th annual Halifax/Indian River Cleanup.

The project started at Campbell Middle School where students from their shop program made recycling bins for fishing line. The bins were made out of PVC pipe and constructed beautifully by the students. They unscrew at the bottom so the fishing line can easily be taken out, and recycled.  The money to make the bins was donated by Daytona's Downtown Partnership.

Once the six bins were completed they were sent out to Bonner Elementary, Westside Elementary and Pathways Elementary schools. There, students were taught why it is important to recycle fishing line and use the bins.  The students then decorated the bins so that others would understand how important it is to recycle.

On April 27th, 2002 three students from Pathways Elementary and one from Pine Trails Elementary set up a display at the Farmers Market in Daytona.  There, the four girls taught the community what the bins were for and told them to look for them at their favorite fishing spot. The girls then traveled to the Marina, where a cleanup celebration was taking place. They delivered and displayed the bins and then spoke to the crowd about their project.

The main goal of KDDB's school committee is to teach children about recycling so that they may teach their parents and friends, and someday their own children.  With this project we estimate that we reached over 2000 students and adults.  We hope that you will look for these colorful recycling bins at the Marina, piers and bridges in Daytona Beach.
