The
purpose of the Class II Ordinance
is to protect and improve the water quality of the Indian River Lagoon.
The Indian River Lagoon contains waters designated as Class II by the
Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the only waters in
Volusia County designated for special protection by the Surface Water
Improvement and Management Act (SWIM). Additionally, these waters have
been designated as an “estuary of national significance” by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency. Stormwater and native vegetation
provisions of this ordinance are designed to reduce the negative impacts
of development adjacent to the Indian River Lagoon and to protect the
natural resource and shellfish harvesting industry in that area.
