Spruce Creek Snail
Melongena sprucecreekensis

The Spruce Creek Snail is a conch that inhabits marine and brackish waters. The conch may be constituted a new species as, the USFWS and the Smithsonian Institution are presently trying to determine the validity of this idea by testing the genetic individuality of Melongena sprucecreekensis. This particular conch is very rare due to its specialized diet of only oysters. In addition, the small geographic range of the conch is a contributing factor top the snail's rarity. The conch is endemic to Spruce Creek, Strickland Bay, Turnbull Bay, and Rose Bay. The conch is very descriptive and unique with its spiky top and colored bands across its shell. Melongena sprucecreekensis also burrows itself in the muddy bottoms of the water bodies to reduce predation.
