Partnerships to solutions

Spurred by local interest, the City of Port Orange, Volusia County, and the St. Johns River Water Management District are coordinating efforts to address the problems of Rose Bay. Partnerships and plans are being developed with the Florida Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Coordination among local, regional, and state agencies has produced a restoration plan.

Present problems

Stormwater runoff carries nutrients, roadway sediments, and other pollutants into the Bay.

Septic system leachate from nearby residences seeps into the Bay. Nutrient pollution fuels algae blooms that cloud the water and add to the mat of organic sediment throughout the bay. Increased bacterial levels from leachate create unsafe shellfish-harvesting conditions and other potential public health concerns.

Restricted water flow from two manmade causeways inhibits circulation that once helped keep Rose Bay healthy. The result is a decline in water quality and an extensive buildup of sediments that smother productive estuary bottom habitat.
