Well water advisory

Residents who have lost power and are concerned about the quality of their water should note the following instructions for disinfecting water. This information is only for those residents using wells as a source of drinking water.
Boiling – vigorously boil water for one full minute to kill any disease causing bacteria in water. The flat taste of boiled water can be improved by pouring it back and forth from one container into another, allowing it to stand for a few hours, and adding a small pinch of salt for each quart of water boiled.
Chemical Treatment – when boiling is not practical, chemical disinfection should be used. Chlorine bleach should be mixed at 10 drops per quart to purify. The treated water should be mixed thoroughly and allowed to stand for 30 minutes. The water should have a slight chlorine odor; if not repeat the dosage and allow the water to stand for another 15 minutes. If the treated water has too strong a chlorine taste, it can be made more palatable by pouring it back and forth from one clean container to another several times.

Residents living within Volusia, Flagler, Marion, Lake, Sumter, Levy, Citrus or Hernando Counties looking for evacuated Flagler/Volusia citizens should call 1-800-896-9749.
For Fourth of July activities, officials advise that only contained grills (with four sides) are approved for use. No pit or open-faced grills are allowed.
