Quiet Fourth Allows County Mop-Up Time

Smoke-filled skies, fireworks bans and the exhaustion of the battle against nature might have dampened the Fourth of July celebration in Volusia, but the day provided another step forward in the County’s efforts to vanquish the fires that have plagued it for weeks. Mopping-up operations have begun in many districts of the County. Many fires have been officially contained.
Volusia County Fire Service also, for the first time, was able to deploy two strike teams of apparatus and firefighters to aid in the firefighting efforts in Flagler County, with the teams specifically assigned near the Counties’ shared boundaries.
By early evening, Volusia’s only mandatory evacuation areas were in the Ormond Beach area: Airport Road north of Durrance Lane, Hunter’s Ridge Plantation Pines and Rima Ridge. Breakaway Trails sub-division had earlier been moved to voluntary evacuation status. Plantation Pines’ immediate evacuation shelter is Seabreeze High School at 2700 N. Oleander in Ormond Beach.
The Citizens Information Center established by Emergency Management was receiving half the calls today that it had yesterday. The County’s evacuation shelters were currently accommodating approximately 410 people.
