CREWS WORK TO COMPLETE FIRE LINES AROUND STUBBORN LAKE
HELEN FIRE
Crews from Volusia County Fire Services,
Public Works, the Division of Forestry and two, 10-man inmate teams were working Friday
morning to complete fire lines around a stubborn wildfire which flared up again Thursday
near Lake Helen.
Firefighters said between 800-1,000 acres
have been burned in the blaze, which erupted Monday. The fire, about a mile south of State
Road 44 and about 2 and a half miles east of the Volusia County Fairgrounds, has been
classified as under control but not completely contained. No injuries have been reported
and no homes have been threatened.
"Our objective today is to get fire
lines completely around this fire," said Volusia County Deputy Fire Chief Ken Gaines.
"If the weather cooperates, we should be able to accomplish this by
mid-afternoon."
Winds today are expected to be 13 mph and
shift from out of the northwest, which means the fire will burn to the southeast.
An inmate crew also is working to mop up a
fire off Highbanks in the DeBary area. The fire broke out Saturday, but was contained
quickly. Thursdays high winds caused it to flare up again.
A Field Operations Center reactivated
Thursday at the Fire Training Center west of Daytona Beach was closed at midnight
Thursday.
