Deputy Chief Weaver is first in Fire Services to receive Certified
Emergency Manager Credential
Demonstrating a working knowledge of the basic principles
of disaster/emergency management as well as having completed prescribed training and
education in the field, Deputy Chief Kathy Weaver has become the first member of Volusia
County Fire Services to achieve the designation of Certified Emergency Manager (CEM). The
designation of CEM is the highest honor of professional achievement available from the
International Association of Emergency Managers. She met the requirements of the
certification by also providing work history that included actual disaster experience,
completion of a Bachelor Degree, the completion of a management essay and the passing of a
written test measuring her knowledge of the discipline. Her new title makes her
recognizable as having experience and knowledge of community-wide participation in
planning; coordination and management functions designed to improve disaster/emergency
management. Every five years her designation as a CEM will be reviewed and she will need
to meet certain requirements to continue the certification. Deputy Chief Weaver has been
with Volusia County Fire Services since 1999 and is currently the leader of the Planning
and Special Services Team.
