Fuels Mitigation Manager
We believe Volusia County Fire Services to
be the first
local fire department in Florida to designate a person full time to
addressing the threat of wildfire in the community. This person, known as
the Fuels Mitigation Manager, is responsible for overseeing all activities
that relate to the management of wildland fuels for the purpose of
protecting homeowners, business merchants and other interests from the
threat of wildfire. This first step in this process is to evaluate
interface areas using the Volusia County Wildland/Urban Interface Wildfire
Hazard Assessment Guide. Although the program is primarily targeted toward
the wildland/urban interface, there are circumstances that dictate the
need for fuels reduction outside of the interface as well. Coordination
with federal, state, neighboring local governments, and private landowners
is an important part of the duties. Some specific responsibilities
include:
- Evaluate wildland/urban interface areas
to determine risk.
- Determine strategies to address those
risks (prescribed burning, mechanical fuel reduction, or use of
herbicides).
- Conduct fuel reduction operations and/or
coordinate with other agencies or landowners that are performing these
operations.
- Provide education, guidance, and
assistance to homeowners.
Prescribed burning and other fuel reduction
operations are conducted using trained personnel from the Volusia County
Firewalker Team.
