Armored truck extrication

An armored truck was headed southbound on Interstate 95 at SR 44 the night of July 21, 2007 when it struck a guardrail and turned on its side, trapping the driver and the crew member. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the crew member, who had been in the back of the armored truck, coming out of the vehicle while the driver was unresponsive and trapped inside.

Access to the armored vehicle was gained by using a ladder and getting the firefighting crew inside the heavy open door, which was now on top of the vehicle. The door remained open and guarded by the injured armed guard. Meanwhile, the firefighters and medics gained access to the injured driver, provided EMS care and prepared to remove him using a backboard and Stokes basket on which he was lowered to the ground using a ladder and rope system.

The patients were stabilized on scene and transported to Halifax Hospital for additional treatment. The extrication was challenging but the crews from New Smyrna Beach Fire Department, Edgewater Fire and Rescue, EVAC and VCFS overcame the obstacles.
