Semi-tractor Trailer Overturned at Mile Marker 247

On the morning of July 15, 2006, Volusia County Fire Services responded to Interstate 95 at the 247 mile marker for an overturned semi-tractor trailer carrying frozen food. Engine 23 arrived on the scene, established command and completed a size-up and determined that the driver was entrapped inside of the cab. With the truck still smoking, crews initiated extrication using the extrication tools and related equipment on Engine 23 and Squad 12.

Once contact was established with the male patient, it was determined that a Class A wrecker would be needed to facilitate a safe extrication. The wrecker crews arrived on scene and quickly set a sling in place around the cab area of the semi to lift the cab off of the patient. The patient was extricated approximately 50 minutes later, stabilized on the scene and transported to Halifax Hospital by Air One. It was a well coordinated effort by Volusia County Fire Services, Port Orange Fire/Rescue, New Smyrna Beach Fire/Rescue, EVAC, Edgewater Wrecker, AA Wrecker of Port Orange and the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
