Medical care protocols
The following protocols are intended to
secure the provision of uniform excellence in pre-hospital care to the
citizens and visitors of Volusia County. The Protocols also serve to drive
other regional patient care initiatives, such as educational and quality
improvement activities.

Protocol development is a collaborative
process involving numerous stakeholders such as the provider agencies, the
Medical Director, the EMS Medical Advisory Board and Halifax Medical Center,
the County's Regional Trauma Center.
The protocols are divided into four sections:
General
Principles (100 series) deal with the general philosophy of
Volusia County's EMS System, medico legal situations which may impact upon
the ability of the field EMS providers to proceed with care, Trauma
Transport procedures, and the educational and quality improvement processes.
Medical Care
Guidelines (200 and 300 Series) feature the specific
guidelines themselves.
Procedural
Protocols (400 Series) outline the steps to be followed when
performing a pre-hospital intervention.
Authorized
Pharmaceuticals and The Medication Resume (Series 500 and
600) summarize the indications, doses, and effects of pharmacologic agents
used in the pre-hospital setting.
These Protocols have been authorized by the Volusia County EMS
Medical Director under Article III, Ch. 46 Volusia County Code, Florida
Statute 401, and Florida Administrative Code 64E-2 . They will be
updated on a bi-annual and an "as needed" basis.
