Software

The Volusia County Geographic Information System Activity utilizes the following software packages to create maps and perform spatial analyses:

  • Windows 2003 Server Operating System
  • ArcGIS Geographic Information System software
  • ArcSDE Geographic Information System Database Middleware
  • MS SQL Server 2000 Database Software
  • ArcObjects Developer's toolkit containing mapping components
  • ArcIMS - Web Application Development and Deployment
  • Onpoint - Used with ArcIMS for Web Application Development and Deployment.
  • ArcExplorer - Free, downloadable viewer for GIS data
  • Visual Basic Programming language for application development
  • MrSID - Image Compression Utility

ArcIMS

Web applications will be one of the primary methods for providing spatially enabled data to our customers. ArcIMS is one of the strategic tools that will be used to implement these web applications. ArcIMS allows for custom application development for many needs.  ArcIMS will allow users to view and analyze the County's GIS data via the web.To learn more about ArcIMS, visit ESRI's website.

Visual Basic

GIS has chosen to use Microsoft's Visual Basic as its development tool because it provides one of the fastest and easiest means of creating Windows-based applications.  It is called "Visual" Basic because of the manner in which a user may create a Graphical User Interface.  The user may simply drag-and-drop pre-built objects into place on the screen, without having to write numerous lines of code to describe their appearance and location.  In this manner, an item such as a pull-down list may be simply dragged onto the user interface, while the programmer need only worry about putting values in that list.

ArcExplorer

ArcExplorer is a lightweight desktop GIS data viewing tool developed by ESRI. It can be used either as an Internet client, or as a stand-alone application working with local data. Users can display and query a wide variety of data sets, such as ArcInfo coverages, Shapefiles, and images. It can also pan and zoom through multiple data layers, save and retrieve views and print maps. This application is being distributed free of charge and it is our plan to install it on desktops countywide.
