Volusia County won the Drive $marter Challenge in the large county category. The contest was sponsored by NACo, the Alliance to Save Energy and AutoZone.
Eight-hundred eighty-nine Volusia County residents and employees pledged in the Drive $marter Challenge. As a result, Volusia County will receive a $3,500 grant, courtesy of AutoZone.

In the first year of the
Drive $marter Challenge, 3,636 county employees and residents took the challenge to improve gas mileage and reduce carbon emissions by pledging to properly inflate tires, drive sensibly, and keep vehicles in good working order.
“The active participation in this year’s Drive $marter Challenge exemplifies the commitment of our nation’s counties to energy efficiency and environmentally friendly living,” said NACo President, Valarie Brown, supervisor, Sonoma County, Calif. “We appreciate our partnership with AutoZone and the Alliance to Save Energy to promote energy efficiency in county governments.”
AutoZone is a supplier through the
U.S. Communities Government Purchasing Alliance.
Volusia County also participated in the Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR Campaign.
Through the Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR Campaign
, 4,560 county employees and residents throughout the country pledged to replace 46,050 light bulbs in their homes with ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). In addition, county employees and residents pledged to take other energy-saving actions, such as: purchasing ENERGY STAR qualified products, improving home insulation, and making home heating and cooling systems energy-efficient.
Fifty counties from 23 states participated in one or both of NACo’s 2009 green county competitions which ran from July 1 to Nov 30.
