back to growth management home page Future land use map amendments The following information is provided to give direction to persons who are interested in applying for an amendment to the Future Land Use Map of Volusia County. The map is part of the Future Land Use Element which is Chapter One of the County's Comprehensive Plan. The State allows local governments to amend their comprehensive plans twice a year. Typically, Volusia County will initiate the first amendment in the fall of the year and the second in the spring. The fall amendments are referred to as Amendment Cycle 1 and the spring cycle is referred to as Amendment Cycle 2. From initiation of an amendment cycle to its completion, can take from 9 months to a year. During the cycle, the amendments are reviewed once by the Volusia County Planning and Land Development Commission; twice by the County Council; twice by the Florida Department of Community Affairs, and once by the Volusia Growth Management Commission.
Are there any exceptions to the "two-a-year" rule? Yes, minor amendments to the land use map may be made throughout the year. A minor amendment would be for a parcel of land which is 10 acres or less in area and, if converted to a residential use, that use must have a density of 10 residential units per acre or less. There is a cap on the total number of acres a local government may process within a given calendar year. If you are interested in a small scale amendment, or desire additional information, please contact Susan Jackson, Planner III, at (386) 736-5959. back to growth management home page Comments or questions?
