The Land Management Activity is
responsible for the management, enhancement and restoration of
approximately 32,000 acres in Volusia County. Much of these lands have
been set aside for conservation purposes, but still allow passive
recreation such as hiking, biking, horseback riding and primitive
camping. Special permits are required for some activities. The following
link (Ordinance 2006-01)
outlines the rules relating to conservation lands within the county.
Find out more about each of the individual properties with the
Conservation Lands map. Once
you’re on the map put your cursor over any of the sites, click on it,
and you will be taken directly to that site.
In addition to conducting land management operations, the Activity
evaluates the natural resources and management component of properties
submitted as part of the
Volusia Forever
process. Recommendations are forwarded to the
Volusia
Forever Advisory Committee as to the condition and the
management requirements.
Historically, nature provided all the management needed on natural
lands. With the advent of the introduction of exotic species, fire
suppression, urban impacts, forestry practices, game poaching and user
impacts, natural lands rarely function as they did in the past.
Generally, the habitats have become denser. Trees and shrubs have
replaced grasses and herbs as the major component of the understory,
thus affecting a variety of wildlife.
The type of management and restoration on any given site varies greatly.
Various factors are evaluated to determine management needs and goals
and multiple techniques are used to restore or maintain an area until
restoration can be accomplished. The Activity has established formal
land management and conservation goals which can be found in
Resolution
2003-80.
The best way to experience and appreciate
these lands is to go visit them. To assist in this endeavor the county
has established a Conservation Land Outreach
program. Click on this link to find out about tours, education
classes and other programs. To learn more about all the conservation
lands in the county that you can visit click on
