Since restoration, many
families of the federally threatened Florida scrub jay live
on the preserve and the diversity of scrub plants has
increased.
Three trails travers through
one of the most endangered ecosystems in the United States –
Florida scrub. Scrub habitat exists on porous, infertile
sand which extended out of the sea as island dunes
approximately two million years ago when Florida’s peninsula
was covered by ocean.

These ancient
islands are home to a unique community of plants
and animals that have adapted for survival in
this hot, dry habitat. Lyonia Preserve
is only a fragment of the surrounding area in
Deltona which contains the characteristic
low-growing, desert-like flora and fauna of
scrub. However, much of the scrub land remaining
in Deltona has been developed or is overgrown
with sand pines and unsuitable for scrub
species. |
