Charter Review Commission schedules listening sessions

J. Hyatt Brown, chairman of Brown & Brown Insurance's board and a former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, was elected chair of Volusia County’s Charter Review Commission during the group’s organizational meeting Sept. 3.

Former Daytona Beach Mayor Glenn Ritchey Sr. was elected vice chair.

Members voted to hold a series of listening sessions in which residents will be asked to share their thoughts on what issues the commission should review. These meetings will be held at 5:30 p.m. on these dates:

  • Sept. 15: New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, 1001 S. Dixie Freeway, New Smyrna Beach
  • Sept. 16: Deltona Regional Library, 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona
  • Sept. 21: Ormond Beach Regional Library, 30 S. Beach St., Ormond Beach
  • Sept. 23: Daytona Beach Regional Library at City Island, 105 E. Magnolia Ave., Daytona Beach
  • Sept. 29: Volusia County Historic Courthouse, second-floor training room, 125 W. New York Ave., DeLand

Comments also may be submitted online at www.volusia.org/charter-review.

The commission’s next meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in the second-floor Volusia Room of the Daytona Beach International Airport, 700 Catalina Drive, Daytona Beach. Attendees may bring their parking slips to the meeting for validation and free parking.

The listening sessions and meeting are open to the public. Reservations are not required.

The commission was appointed by the Volusia County Council in July to study the county’s Home Rule Charter, which is the equivalent of a local constitution for the operations of Volusia County Government. The charter, passed in June 1970 in a countywide vote, requires a citizen review at least every 10 years.
