LPGA brush fire #7

According to the Division of Forestry, the fire is approximately 800 acres and 55 percent contained. There have been flare-ups on both sides of LPGA Boulevard, inside the LPGA International subdivision and behind the Bayberry Lakes subdivision. This morning, fire crews were able to cut additional fire lines around the fire before the weather conditions deteriorated. With the worsening weather conditions, there have been spot fires that the firefighters are working to contain. Fire officials estimate the wind to be moving steady out of the west at 10-12 miles per hour and gusting up to 20 miles per hour.

Residents who evacuated from the LPGA International subdivision are still evacuated from their homes. However, residents who need to go back to their homes for medical supplies are being allowed in for a brief amount of time with police escort. Residents need to go to Tomoka Farms Road and LPGA Boulevard and have picture identification.

The Red Cross shelter continues to remain open for evacuees. The shelter is at the Hampton Inn, 1715 West International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach. The City of Daytona Beach has a hotline for evacuated residents to call for information. The number is 386-671-5347.

A Daytona Beach firefighter was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

LPGA Boulevard between Williamson Boulevard and International Speedway Boulevard remains closed to traffic.

The Division of Forestry advises that the fire will continue to smolder and produce smoke for the next couple of days. Residents should not be alarmed by the smoke and call 911 only if they see flames. With the continued dry conditions, there remains the potential for more fire activity.

Drivers should be aware that smoke may cause visibility problems especially in the early morning hours. Drivers can call 511 for the latest traffic information.

The animals evacuated from the Halifax Humane Society continue to be housed at the Volusia County Fairgrounds.
