LPGA brush fire #9

EDITOR'S NOTE: This will be the last news update unless something significant occurs.

According to the Division of Forestry, overnight the fire stayed within the fire lines, remains at approximately 797 acres and is 55 percent contained. Fire officials hope to have the fire 100 percent contained today and begin mop up operations for the next couple of days. (Mop up is when firefighters go through the area picking through the burned brush to make sure there are no hot spots.)

LPGA Boulevard between Williamson and International Speedway boulevards have been opened for all traffic. Please be aware of police and fire vehicles and personnel who continue to work in the area. When approaching public safety vehicles, please use caution. Theses vehicles tend to move slowly on the roadways.

Smoke remains in the area. The Division of Forestry advises that the fire will continue to smolder and produce smoke for the next couple of days. Residents should not be alarmed by the smoke and call 911 only if they see flames. With the continued dry conditions, there remains the potential for more fire activity.

Drivers should be aware that smoke may cause visibility problems especially in the early morning hours. Drivers can call 511 for the latest traffic information.

Four Daytona Beach Fire Department brush trucks and a Division of Forestry taskforce (bulldozers, brush trucks and support vehicles) will remain on scene for the remainder of the day. Firefighters will continue to respond to hot spots that may cross the fire lines.

The city of Daytona Beach has resumed normal operations and has discontinued staffing the emergency operations center. The hotline number (671-5347) should no longer be utilized until further notification.
