LPGA
brush fire #11
Firefighters continue to increase the width of the fire lines around the
LPGA fire. The fire remains at 797 acres and is 55-percent contained
according to the Division of Forestry. LPGA Boulevard is open and there are
no evacuations at this time. The Daytona Beach hotline number, 386-671-5347,
will remain open until 5 p.m. for anyone having questions about the LPGA
fire.
In Daytona Beach, firefighters responded Tuesday afternoon to a half-acre
fire behind the Volusia Mall (between Jimmy Ann Drive and Dunn Avenue).
Firefighters were on scene quickly and protected an apartment complex and
nearby nursing home/assisted living facility. The Division of Forestry
plowed a line around the fire and Daytona Beach firefighters will continue
to monitor for flare-ups. Daytona International Speedway donated a sprinkler
and hose to distribute water to an area adjacent to the apartment complex.
The sprinkler can distribute 400 gallons of water per minute a couple of
days to saturate the ground next to the apartment complex and also to
minimize smoke conditions that may affect the nursing home/assisted living
facility. There were no evacuations or road closures associated with this
fire.
Due to the ongoing dry conditions throughout Volusia County, Volusia County
Fire Services has issued an outdoor burn ban for the unincorporated area of
Volusia County effective Wednesday, May 14. The ban also applies to the
cities of DeBary, Oak Hill and Lake Helen and the Town of Pierson.
Under the burn ban, all outdoor burning, unless authorized by the Florida
Division of Forestry, is prohibited. This includes the burning of yard
trash, household paper products, bonfires, campfires, warming fires and
cooking fires. Outdoor cooking done with a contained gas or charcoal grill
(excluding a fire pit) is the only exception.
