Aug. 6, 2009 The unconfirmed cases were reported in two Flagler Palm Coast High School football team members and one youngster participating in the summer camp program at the Flagler County Youth Center on the campus of Flagler Palm Coast High School.. Letters were sent home to parents from both activities yesterday to inform them of the possible concerns and the symptoms to watch for. Both activities are still being conducted. "Our thoughts are with the students who are ill and their families. We are taking every precaution possible to present the spread of the flu," Flagler County School Superintendent Bill DelBrugge said. "With school scheduled to open this month it is important to do every thing we can to prevent it from taking hold here." The Flagler County Health Department has in place a notification system where the Health Department is alerted by doctors, Flagler Hospital and health clinics in the county of patients with symptoms of the flu. Flagler County Health Department Director of Nursing Bonnie J. Welter R.N, said the best thing that parents and others can do right now is take preventative measures to stem the spread of the flu. "People with respiratory illness should stay home from work or school to avoid spreading infections, including influenza, to others in the community," Welter said. "Avoid close contact with people who are coughing or otherwise appear ill, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and wash your hands frequently." "We are providing outreach education to schools and daycare centers and working closely with the staff to ensure education materials are available for parents," Welter said. The Flagler County Health Department is aware of sporadic potential and confirmed H1N1 activity. The department continues enhanced surveillance and outreach within the county." State wide 41 deaths have been attributed to the disease. While most cases of H1N1 are mild there are exceptions. Pre-existing health conditions often play a role in how individuals react to the flu. The State Health Department advises that if you think you have influenza, please call your health care provider and discuss whether you need to be seen in their office, emergency department or stay home. A website with information in English and Spanish for parents and other information on the disease is available at www.doh.state.fl.us.
