Health Department Issues Mosquito Caution

September 1, 2009 Bunnell Fl. -- An increase in Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) a disease carried by mosquitoes that can transmitted to humans has been reported by the Flagler County Health Department.

The increase was reported in flocks of sentinel chickens kept in different locations throughout the county to detect EEE and other diseases including: West Nile Virus, St. Louis Encephalitis, Malaria and Dengue. Blood samples are taken from the caged chickens and periodically tested. The program is part of a state wide surveillance of mosquito borne illnesses.

The disease, carried by mosquitoes, has also surfaced in the surrounding counties of Volusia, Putnam and St. Johns.

The Flagler County Health Department reminds residents and visitors to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes if possible. The Health Department recommends following the five “D’s”

They are:

  • Dusk and Dawn – avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are seeking blood.
  • Dress Wear clothing that covers most of your skin
  • DEET – When the potential exists for exposure repellants with up to 30 percent DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) are recommended. Other effective mosquito repellents include picardin, oil of lemon eucalyptus and IR3535.
  • Drainage- check around your home to rid the area of standing water where mosquitoes lay eggs

Always read label directions carefully for the approved usage and some repellants are not suitable for children.

For more information about mosquito borne illnesses visit the State Department of Health website or call the local Health Department at (386)-437-8262.
